Cara Shousterman

Cara Shousterman is an American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Public Fellow and HI’s Partnerships and Engagement Manager. At HI, Cara is responsible for leveraging external partners and supporting various types stakeholders as they work with Harmony Institute to discover new ways of applying media for social impact. In particular, Her role at HI focuses on the adoption of and new uses for StoryPilot.

Cara holds a PhD in Linguistics from New York University, where she researched a dialect of English spoken in Spanish Harlem. She began her study of language with a BA in Linguistics from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. Her linguistic work has appeared in the journals English Today and the Journal of English Linguistics, as well as in the Oxford Handbook of African American Language. Her current research interests lie at the intersection of media, language and society, and understanding the tridirectional influence of all three. In her free time she is learning aerial dance.
